As the number of websites i work on increases i decided it was time to stop logging into each Webmail account individually and start using a Mail Client to increase productivity. I decided to use Mozilla Thunderbird but came across a slight problem while trying to setup an email account hosted with Arvixe. All the settings appeared to be correct but when i tried to send an email the email would send but Thunderbird hangs “Copying message to sent folder” . This message box would not disappear and would also not copy the email to my sent items. See below image:

Thunderbird Message Box

At first i found a temporary solution of not saving my sent email messages but this was hardly a fix as my Sent items would never be stored. I decided to do a bit more poking around and found the real solution. I’m not aware if this fix applies to other hosting companies but if you have the same problem then it maybe worth trying the below.

The Solution

  1. Go to Tools-> Account Settings.
  2. Click on the relevant email account in the left hand listbox.
  3. Go to “Copies & Folders”.
  4. Make sure “Place a copy in” is ticked
  5. Select “Other”
  6. Pick your email account you are using from the drop down and go into “Inbox” and then pick “Sent”. See below image:

Please note that when i first added the email account, the nested list was not available. I had to go back to the main inbox form and click on “Inbox” under the email account for this to load the folders. After doing so the nested list appeared in the settings.

You should now be able to send emails from Thunderbird and they will also be in your “Sent” folder.
